EMBRACE YOUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS (Sax POV)

Love every phase

Now, I would consider myself as an open minded person, believe it or not but it bothers me when all people talk about is their high status and ‘professionalism ‘ in the saxophone industry. I mean sure, flaunt it if you got it, but do not create a mirage of the beginning phase being a crappy phase that is always excluded in a Sax story.

The main reason why it “Bothers” me is because I feel like people fail to see the Big Picture. I Got so engrossed with trying to be a perfect saxophonist that I didn’t really enjoy playing the saxophone anymore.

It became those “just get it over with “ kinda things …you know, like university 😑( stay in school kids.)

On a serious note, Music became a chore for me…just MEH🙄!

At that point, I knew that i forgot about the fun insecure shy 11yr old girl who felt like she didnt have friends and just ended up with a sax .I forgot how happy I was to learn and make mistakes and no pressure to be perfect. to be yourself

I get it, The whole persona of being a Nigerian saxophonist

  • Some of us want to play and get paid
  • some want to make sax covers and be in the music booth
  • some work in the gospel industry

But don’t deny yourself the pleasure of knowing where and how you started.

Going down memory lane reminded me why I love music so much. it’s a healing experience, an expression of love. a message from the heart. For me, that’s the definition of music and I forgot that.

That Drive, that passion was what I was missing in my pursuit for perfection or whatever that phase of my sax life was😅

Be who you are

Being a begineer doesn’t make you less of a saxophonist. It is even the most crucial phase of your sax journey because it can make or break your learning curve.

I do hope that wherever you are in your sax journey that you embrace your humble beginnings and make a part of your sax life and journey
